The rumors we reported weeks ago surrounding Spring Awakening Festival in Chicago turned out to false — in part. Although there’s no Daft Punk, Skrillex is getting his first taste of headlining a major festival (albeit a new one). Supporting acts include Moby, Flux Pavillion, Diplo, A-Trak, Wolfgang Gartner, Ferry Corsten, Claude VonStroke, Derrick Carter, Green Velvet, and others headline. A balance of new and old electronic flavors, 2-day passes for the June 16th-17th festival are on sale for $99 — a worthy adversary to Lollapalooza and Pitchfork for those craving dance music.
The experimental dubstep outfits have officially sold out their show at Blue Moose Taphouse scheduled for this week in Iowa City. It’s Big G’s first trip to Iowa City — and a landmark sell-out show for a still very much growing bass music scene in the Corridor area.
Solar Perceptions Experiences have announced a short-notice show in Cedar Rapids on St. Patrick’s Day, featuring artists from both the dubstep and techno-laden sides of the electronic scene. The March 17th show boasts Mike Gervais, Matt Rissi, ACG3, KAGE, DarkGrey, Defender, and D-Boy. Tickets are on sale on the door for $15 — if any previous Solar Perception parties are to go by, this event will be worth every last penny.
DO YA THING — GORILLAZ FEAT. JAMES MURPHY + ANDRE 3000
Part of me wants to hold it against these three amazing artists that this collaboration was 100% brokered by Converse Shoes for a new line of Gorillaz-themed shoes — but that part of me is shut up as soon as Damon Albarn whispers his magic upon the track. Both of the contributions from the former LCD Soundsystem frontman and Andre are top notch. Corporately funded though it may be, it’s a killer crossover track that appeals to the masses.
ICARUS — MADEON
A new release from the young French prodigy. Solid track, even if it falls short of some of his other efforts… Not that it matters much — at 17, Madeon’s got plenty of time to play with his sound.
CLOSER (PREVIEW) — DEADMAU5
The man in the mau5-head has released an in-progress track that puts a progressive spin on the infamous notes from the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It’s unrefined — and not in the most charming way — but if you’re a fan of Deadmau5, it’s worth a listen.
GHOSTS EP (SAMPLE MIX) — DARKGREY
The 19-year-old Cedar Falls-based producer has released a teaser of his forthcoming EP. If this is an accurate indication of what’s to come, it will be his best release to date. Watch this space.
